Oh how fun! I had such a blast re-decorating Noah's room a while back. It's great when you know certain things that they like that you can incorporate into it. It's just that much more fun for them.
I made Noah's CARS-themed bedroom set (curtains and crib set) since he is so into the movie CARS. There's a lot of red, a lot of checkered-flag printed fabric and a lot of Lightning McQueen (not sure if you're familiar with the movie or not). Plus I had the wooden letters that spelled his name that I painted gray with yellow street lines and hot-glued little cars to the letters so it looks like cars driving down the roads that are shaped like his name. We've added stuff to his room as we've found it like the CARS rug with the roads on it and a little CARS chair.
Maybe instead of going with a themed character you can pick similar colors. You can try that dark purple like Barney with some cool neon green like his spots and find or make a bedding set and curtains that match. You can get those letters that spell her name and paint them purple and green and hang them on the wall.
I made my daughter's crib set (she'll be born any minute now...) and I did it in pink and purple. It turned out so cute! It's girly but not themed.
I'm so excited for you. I love re-decorating and being all crafty. But the good thing with doing just the colors is that it's not necessarily a theme, more as a way to make things match. If she has Barney stuffed animals they would look great on her bed that matches, KWIM? Have fun!!!
You could try purple and red together. The purple would feminize the room. Maybe if you can find some fuzzy red pillows like Elmo's fur, that would be cute and help tie them both together.

Of course, you could do variations on any of these, but it might start sparking the creativity and give you a jump start.
I have a daughter too, she'll be two next month.
DYK I agree with PPs.
