Toddler TV

I was just watching the Today show about toddlers watching tv, and how much is appropriate.

The majority of the moms said that they put their kids in front of the tv a little in the morning and then in the afternoon, and also so they can get something done or run in to take a shower.

Brady, my 25 month old watches a lot of TV in the morning. Noggin or Nick Jr. And we watch a lot of dvd's. It increased after Cory, my second one, was born because I need to get him entertained so I can take care of the baby. But now Cory loves to watch Dora, Diego and Cars.

I'm looking forward to when Cory can walk so the playground and the children's museum are a little more fun for them. It's going to be a while. He was a preemie that caught up in weight and height, but is developmentally still 3 months behind.

Sometimes I wonder if that is just an excuse though.

Nah, I think we all do it, sometimes we need that tv on to save our sanity and get a moment to ourselves too.

Bree does not pay any attention to the tv, but Lilli and Abbie watch about an hour in the am and about 2 inthe afternoon. It is all PBS so I don't feel too guilty.

We're a TV household, so it seems like the TV is almost always on. Ben glances at it once in awhile, but the only thing he'll actually watch is one of his DVD's (Elmo, Baby Einstein, or Barney) or the weather. This kid loves to see the weather; I think he wants to be Al Roker!

My kiddos (3.5 and 20 months) watch a lot of movies, but it's almost all Disney movies. (They love Over The Hedge and Cars...and so do I!) We don't have a ton of room for the boys to play, and it's not a good neighborhood (so the park is not an option right now), and we only have one car (again. thanks, fil!) so we can't go to a park in a nearby neighborhood. Anyway... some one-on-one time without the TV, meals with the TV off, family games, some outside time together. There's still a lot of movies, but we balance it out. There are lots of days that they play in their room with the TV off and/or only get one movie as they unwind for the day after they've played hard.

We are a morning TV house. We watch PBS until Sesame Street is over. Now that my son can reach the TV, he likes to turn it on himself. That makes it kind of difficult to keep it off during the day. Mostly, it's just background noise for him unless a song comes on. I don't see anything wrong with TV as long as kids are not forced to watch. It's especially helpful on a rainy day!

The Rule: One movie and one Veggie Tale per week. When DH is out of town or when someone is sick, they'll watch more. As couch potatoes ourselves, we don't want our kids learning that the tv is a way to entertain regularly, so it's rarely on. Frankly, it drives me crazy to not have it on more! They are bugging me to watch Cars right now and I know I'll give in-dh is out of town AND I have a sinus thing so they're gonna get all the tv they can stand!

I think that if they watch the right shows, they can get alot out of them. My little one watches maybe 30 mins in the morning and then on/off in the afternoon. The tv may be on...for her 6 yr old sister or even for me...but she may be doing other stuff.
