Transferring VHS to DVD

Any ideas on the best way to transfer our home videos to DVD? Would you take it in somewhere or purchase something to do this. I know there are now DVD/VHS recorders, but they are pretty expensive and we only need it for a few videos. But I'm a little nervous though about taking our home videos somewhere in the slight chance they would lose or damage them. I'd hate to lose all the videos of our kids when they were babies.
Thanks for any ideas you have!

We just transferred our 8mm tapes to DVD. DH found a burner on sale at Wal-Mart. It isn't hard to do. I'm glad we did it-we are going to dub our DVD's and put a copy in a fireproof safe or lock box at the bank. We have 14 8 mm tapes since DS (9) has been born, and I wouldn't want anything to happen to them! Good luck!
