Ugh, can anyone tell me why?

I love my girls, I love having them home, but good grief - why do they follow me EVERYWHERE? If I come into the den to type on the computer and check out the boards, they are right in here with me, chattering my ear off, touching everything in sight, etc. If I go in the bathroom, they stand/sit right outside the bathroom door and chatter away. It is non-stop. Then, if I ask them to go find something to do, they act as if I've really hurt their feelings! I don't want to discourage them from talking with me, because older dd Katie tells me EVERYTHING that happens, which I want to encourage, but she just has poor timing. What do I do?
Anyone else suffer with this?
Wendy

I'm not sure how old your girls are but I went through this w/my older two kids. (I'm sure it will happen w/Graham as well...he does follow me everywhere but that's expected--he's only 20 mo) I too didn't want to do/say anything that would make them feel like they couldn't talk, come w/me etc. but at certain times (like going to the bathroom) I'd say "mommy needs her privacy--why don't you go do X and I'll see you when I finish", etc. After they got used to that, I would "announce" (LOL) where I was going and that I wanted them to do Y until I got back. I would then go in the other room and do a chore or something and then come back & talk to them. I did this to show them that I do/would come back and would be interesed then in what they wanted to do/say.
They're 7 & 5 now and have gotten A LOT better. I think a lot of that is totally normal and they'll ease out of it regardless. Good luck!
You just described my LIFE, only I have 4 of them. FOUR!! They follow me *everywhere*! Tessa and Justin climb on me constantly, the girls are very whiney, Justin pelts me with non-stop questions (I swear he is the most inquisitive child in the world!!), Matthew needs stuff all the time ("Where's my this-and-that?" "Justin took my such-and-such", etc). I am never alone. I can't even pee in peace, because they are outside the bathroom door whacking on it or calling to me or whining.
I get so tired of hearing "Mom!!" I tune it out. I'm terrible. Justin realized that (he's one smart cookie), and also realized that I respond to DH when he calls "Sofia!" so he started calling "Sofia!" too, just to get me to answer, LOL!
::SIGH::
I don't know what to tell you. . . I agree you don't want to DIScourage positive interaction, but it can be totally exhausting!!
Sofia
