Weight loss anyone?
| Wed, 03-28-2007 - 10:18am |
I know this is a subject than no lady likes to discuss, especially me! But I'm curious to know how many of us on the board are on a diet/fitness plan, trying to lose weight, etc?
What program, if any, are you following?
How is it working for you?
What are your diet strengths and weakness'?
How much do you have to lose?
I really want to get motivated and take off this weight I have gained, but I think I need to find a "weight loss buddy" with similar goals so I have some accountability.
Thanks for reading!!

Hi Angie,
You are so right no one wants to talk about it.
I guess I should answer my own questions, huh?? Well even though no one wants to talk about it, I'll start. This is a support board after all, and I know that I'll always get support here!!
What program, if any, are you following? none currently, just *trying* to watch calories
How is it working for you? it's not
What are your diet strengths and weakness'? strengths: i like exercise weakness: I love to cook and love to eat even more
How much do you have to lose? Well I am 5'6" and currently weigh 185. This is the heaviest I have ever been, even when I was pregnant! Ideally I would like to lose 60 pounds, but right now my goal is 40 lbs.
Now come on girls, lets hear it!!!!
C'mon girls --- let's hear it!
Angie I'm glad you posted this, I was thinking of posting something similar yesterday. I would love a buddy to keep me motivated, as I have absolutely NO willpower and I eat sweets all day AND night!
I don't have too much to lose, but I need to lose some nonetheless. AND the thing is I want to lose it before we leave for FL in less than a month, if at all possible. It really hit me yesterday as the weather was warmer here, and I realized soon I won't be able to wear all these long cover up shirts I have been wearing all winter or my winter coat.
I am not on any program right now, but I'll probably start up with my pilates exercising again to begin.
Btw I don't know if you saw my post to you last week, but I did enjoy the magazine you guys were in :)
If you know a safe way to take off weight fast, I'd love to hear it.

I wish. It's pointless for me right now because I'll be having a baby in about three weeks. But you better believe that after I'm healed from the birth and ready to get into it again, I'll be neurotic about losing weight. I have a treadmill and a weight machine here at home that I'll tell you hasn't been used at all in the last nine months. Oops. They'll get broken in again after this baby is born.
I'm hoping to try to lose 30 pounds by the end of summer (that way I can take advantage of the nice weather by going on walks and taking the kids to the park, bike rides, etc.) Then if I hit that weight loss goal by, say, August or September, whenever it starts getting cold outside, DH and I are going to join the athletic club. Makynzie will be old enough where I can either take her to the daycare at the gym or to my sitter that I used for Noah which will cost more money but might be worth it so I feel a little more comfortable. The thing about Fairbanks is that it gets so cold and so dark in the winter that no one likes to leave their house - especially when you have kids to tote around. Hopefully the gym will be a good escape for us. My overall weight loss goal is to lose a total of 50-60 pounds. I'd love to fit into my pre-motherhood jeans again.

I'm trying to cut my portions down, not snack, drink more water, get more sleep...everything a doc would suggest. I'm also in Overeater's Anonymous in my area, and that support is invaluable since I eat compulsively and tend to binge. I don't like exercise, actually, I HATE it! I hate to sweat; it feels like bugs on my skin. But, I do love to DDR. (The dancing game for PS2/Xbox, etc.) Dh and I have done that before with great success! In four months, playing several hours at a time (it flies by - it's addictive!), dh lost almost 40 pounds, and we didn't change our fast-food diet. Now we're not doing fast-food (well, maybe once a month), and we're dancing again.
How is it working for you?
So far it's good. It's a process, so...it's slow, but that's my responsibility. The dancing's great! It picks my mood up since it's something for me that the kids love to watch (and it's okay, since it's just club music, and not a game with gore and violence), and I feel so much lighter on my feet. And it's in my house, so I can do it whenever I need, not just when I can get to a gym. (Just a note: I have a bad hip, but since I can choose my intensity level, it doesn't bother me at all. If anything, my hip has gotten better since I've started dancing because it's stronger and more limber.)
What are your diet strengths and weakness'?
I'm a sugar freak!! Mostly, I eat because I'm bored. I have very little to do right now (long story I've already posted about), so I post and surf and EAT.
How much do you have to lose?
The docs say I should lose about 100 pounds, but I'd be thrilled by 75 or 80! My actual scale weight is weird (I have been a size 4 and still 145 pounds, so...can't go just by the scale). I'm currently a size 20, and I'd like to be a size 6 or 8. I'm 5'5", but I'm big-boned (got my dad's figure) so I know I can't be a skinny size 0 or 2 (or even 4) like some other women my height.
What program, if any, are you following?
Diet: I use the food triangle in conjunction with the book "Eat right for your blood type".
How is it working for you?
I've lost 60 lbs since last July.
What are your diet strengths and weakness'?
Eating too much is my weakness. My strength is that I don't buy the really bad stuff in the first place, lol.
How much do you have to lose?
I'd like to lose 60 more lbs.

"What if the question is not why am I so infrequently the person I really want to be, but why do I so infrequently want to be the person I really am?"
Yep, I'm working off baby weight still...the "baby" is currently 16 months old, heh. I'm 5 foot, always been a petite little thing and effortlessly wore a size 6. I always exercised like crazy, but I ate like a hog too and had a ton of bad health habits. And then the stork visited unexpectedly...
Ahh, I was not one of those women who handled pregnancy well. I was smoking 2 packs a day and I was drinking about 2L of Diet Coke a day, also I took diuretics to control chronic high blood pressure...well, the baby suddenly meant that I had to change my blood pressure medications, as well as quit the smoking and caffiene cold turkey. I gained 20 pounds in my first 2 weeks, and I was throwing up every day! The weight just kept packing on from there, no matter what I ate or did. I followed nutritionist's orders to a T, but I was pre-eclamptic and on bedrest and my metabolism was not dealing well with anything. By my third trimester I just gave up, I was gaining weight by the buckets just eating carrot sticks so why bother? I gave in to my pie fettish and thanked God that at least I didn't have gestational diabetes, heh. Long story short, I gained (gulp) 120 pounds total with my daughter.
I had a nightmarish C-section and came home with an open wound and home health nursing...I was nearly bedridden another 6 months, which also didn't make losing weight easy. And then after all the struggles I had trying to breastfeed, I really didn't want to diet at all and mess with my precarious, hard-earned milk supply. She weaned at 11 months and since then I have slowly been building my health back up. And finally in the last two months I have been strong enough and healthy enough to REALLY start working on getting back into shape again. I've knocked off 75 pounds since she was born and I have 45 pounds to go!
I pretty much count calories. I give myself 1800 calories a day and then if I walk, I get an extra 200 calories. (figuring that 2000 calories/day is the average diet for an active person) I do watch and make sure that I'm eating foods that are low in fat and sodium and high in fiber, I eat tons of whole grains and fresh fruits and veggies and all that crap that they recommend you do! I skip the caffiene almost completely (I drink one cup of coffee in the morning) and I get lots of water. I haven't had a puff of a cigarette since my daughter turned my pee stick blue and I now take "pregnancy safe" blood pressure medications regularly so that when I get pregnant again I won't have to deal with any medication changes. I walk at least 2 miles a day, every day if I can, outside if the weather is nice and at the mall if it's not. My daughter comes along in the stroller or backpack most of the time and if she's not well and I can't walk with her, then I walk in the evening after she goes to bed and my husband is home from work. I find a half hour to walk, just walk, every day nearly without fail...exercise is critical to keeping your metabolism working!
Anyway, I lose about 3 pounds a week and I'm feeling great...the exercise is starting to tone up all those jiggly spots and so 2 weeks ago I took my measurements. I think I'm going to do measurements on a monthly basis the rest of the way to my goal because I have a feeling that the weight loss might slow down now that I'm really building up muscle again...and I like to look at shrinking numbers to keep me motivated :) I don't really care if it's the scale or the tape measure going down and I think at this point in my weight loss the tape measure might be a better gauge as to how well I'm doing!
People struggle to stay on diets...which is why I say don't diet. The body wants to function at it's best and it's not a struggle to lose the weight if you're taking care of your body. (and I firmly believe that starving yourself with 1200-1500 calories a day is NOT taking care of your body) I really believe that. Eat a healthy, balanced diet in the correct calorie range for your age/gender and get out there a MOVE everyday, break a sweat a few times a week...take a walk :) The weight will come off...I'm proof of that!
Good luck everyone!!
