what do u do all day?
| Sun, 07-23-2006 - 9:52pm |
One of my unmarried, child-less girlfriends recently asked me "what do SAHMs do all day?"
So - could you guys describe a typical day of being a SAHM in your life and I will print them all out and hand them to her. She needs to be "educated" on this topic!
thanks
Josee

Here goes...
7:00 get up, ds has already been up for 30 min making a mess. Put on clothes, go down stairs, turn on tv, watch news for weather forecast then turn it to whatever ds wants to watch
7:30 the girls get up, breakfast time. Make breakfast for kids and then have some for myself.
8:00 clean up kids after breakfast, clean kitchen (sweep, dishes, wipedown counters and kitchen table) Get kids dressed. this seems like it should take about 5 minutes but somehow takes about 20 minutes. Go figure.
8:30 start laundry load #1. Make beds. Log on to my favorite board and catch up on posts, if I haven't already.
9:00 referee children.
9:30 Move laundry and start load #2. I'm handing out paper, left and right, for various art projects the kids have dreamt up.
10:00 the kids are whining that they are hungry. waaaaaaaaaa. they have to wait till 10:30, stinks to be them. It's time for me to get cleaned up. Most of the time that's a shower, sometimes it's not.
10:30 snack time. And then clean up snack time.
11:00 I'm back on the computer. I don't feel the least bit guilty about this, because my job doesn't end at 4:00, thank you very much, I'M ON BREAK!!
11:30 Ok, still on the computer. Not guilty.
12:00 Ok, still on the computer. A little bit guilty. But I can have an hour break, right?!
12:30 Time for lunch. My favorite time of the day....NOT. I make 3 different lunces for 3 different kids. Yeah, yeah, I'm dumb.
1:00 Cleaning up lunch. Again, sweeping, dishes, and counters.
1:30 I get lunch. Usually kids leftovers.
2:00 I'm back on the computer. But only for a sec!!! REALLY!! Unless it's monday (I'm in chat if it is).
2:30 It's afternoon snack time and then it's time to get the kids out of the house for fresh air or do some household cleaning. Usually a bathroom, thanks to having a 6yo boy.
3:00 Same as above. Baths, Vacuuming, bathrooms, mopping, dusting, whatever, pick one or 2 and that's what I'm doing.
3:30 Logging back on for what may be the last time of the day. Just checking on posts and keeping up with the dyks, a full time job.
4:00 the shuffle begins. It's time to pick up all the stray paper on the kitchen counter, straighten all the armchair covers, fluff pillows, put away books, pick up blankeys, move cosmetics in master bath and put away finished laundry so it looks like I've been productive when dh gets home at 4:30, as simply cleaning isn't exactly obvious to the untrained eye.
4:30 dh is home! Yay! Time to contemplate dinner. Hmmmmmmm. I come up with some grand idea and get crackin. Dh goes down stairs to exercise, taking crazed children with him. I alternate between making dinner and enjoying the silence.
5:00 Same as above
5:30 dinner is served! At least one of the children is terribly upset with their dining choices, but that's too bad. What do I look like, a short order chef??
6:00 everybody is done (we're quick eaters). Dh sweeps the floor for me (only under the table, meaning I have to redo it doing the whole kitchen, but I appreciate the thought).
The clean up begins. Dh takes the kids outside or plays with them somehow or another, making the clean up more bearable. Dinner clean up usually takes an hour.
7:00 The kids are playing and I am either playing with them or still involved with clean up, depending on what I've made for dinner and how fast I feel like doing the clean up.
7:30 We're all usually in front of the tv.
8:00 Time for the twins to go to bed.
9:00 Time for Nikki to go to bed.
9:30 Time for dh to go to bed, sometimes I go with him, sometimes I log back on to the computer, depending on... well, ya know.
The end
I love and enjoy the time I have with my kids. I have no schedule. No day is ever the same.
I feed the kids, do errands, clean and clean more
