I'm back in the town I grew up in. Grrr. :( It only has a population of 830, according to the sign. We have one gas station, one grocery store, one stoplight, two schools, and five churches. Grrr. It's ridiculous, really. And now that the highway is getting put in - and going around the town - it'll probably die even more. The town we're moving to next year, once this lease is up, is Green Bay (WI), which has almost 127,000. That's big for us! Well, my dh's from DC, so this is a blip on the screen for him. We'd like to move to Baltimore, MD, once we can afford to buy a house of our own. My family's all here in WI, so that'll be enough to drive us to MD! lol
Settled by Mexicans in 1848 and named after the Catholic parish St. Andrew, the town has been a noted mining camp since early days. The gold from the initially discovered placers gave out after a few years, but the discovery of gold in an underground river channel in 1853 revitalized the camp and it soon became a town. Mining of the channels was lucrative enough for the town to completely rebuild after fires in 1858 and 1863. The gold discovered here contributed greatly to the success of the Union during the Civil War. In 1866, San Andreas became the seat of Calaveras County. It was said to be a rendezvous location for Joaquin Murietta. Notorious stagecoach robber Black Bart was tried here and sent to prison.

According to the local newspaper, the Calaveras Enterprise, the San Andreas Merchants Association has been alarmed over the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreasvideo game, which may cause the public to associate the trademark "San Andreas" with inner-city mayhem and violence instead of a peaceful small town in the Sierra foothills. However, when they contacted Take Two Interactive, Take Two's attorneys at Blank Rome LLP explained that their client was on firm legal ground. The Association has conceded that there isn't much they can do.
