Will soon be a SAHM - help!
Fri, 04-11-2014 - 1:37pm

We're moving to a new state and I will be a SAHM. My daughter will be 3 in September. She's currently in daycare. I'm a little nervous about how to switch modes. Any tips on keeping us both busy? I feel like I'm going to be swallowed by mommy stuff since I've worked my entire life. She'll also be starting preschool in September so she'll be gone 2 days a week for half a day.

One possible resource is your local library. They might have story hours for children, which will help you meet other moms in your situation. They also sometimes have book groups, free or low cost movies and lectures. You could also join a gym that offers child care, and use it both when she can go with you and during her school times. If you take classes there, you will meet people and can make 'coffee' or wine dates. If you are a professional, look on Linkedin for people in your new area in your profession and see if there are professional organizations that have meetings you can attend to build contacts. Walk around your neighborhood, and become Freindly with your neighbors. Find out if there is a local newspaper and look for listings of local events. When you meet people, never compare your new area unfavorably with your old area...be positive and upbeat and that will attract freinds, I like routine, so I would say try to get on a daily and weekly schedule. And also, cook and craft with your child, and talk with her about the world around you...she will be little for such a short time...enjoy every minute of this time!

I think you should use this time to pursue your hobby , learn a new skill and maybe try doing something online ...some work from home stuff. Its so important to keep ourselves busy cos when its not very easy to come to terms with a SAHM status especially when you have been working all your life. Keep yourself occupied and busy . Good luck !! :)

Hello.  I felt that way when my children were young.  I did look for ways to work, but only part time.  By part time, I mean perhaps 2 hours in the morning and 2 or 3 hours in the afternoon.  I found the way to do that.  Drive a school bus.  You go to work in the early morning for about 2 hours and later in the afternoon for about 2 to 2 hours.  I know that there are almost always need for these drivers.  I don't know where you live, but if you live around the Joshua, Texas area I can tell you who to call.  Call First Student at (817) 556-0412 Monday through Friday between 8 am and 3 pm.  They will train you also.  The pay is nice and the hours are great.  Ask for Carla or Trish.  If this is not your area just go to www.firststudentinc.com and check our your areas.  I hope this day finds you happy and comfortable in life.
