If I went ahead and asked my MIL what she is getting Bella for Christmas?

My mother refuses to buy any clothes for Bella, since MIL goes overboard.

I think you and your mom should just buy whatever you want, and not worry about what your MIL gets. You can always take it back to the store and exchange it if you want. You could also buy things now, and actually tell her what you got... maybe she'll get the point that you are her mother and are going to buy what you want. I totally understand your frustration with her... she sounds a lot like how my MIL was.

I dont think it would be.
Just let her know you dont want anyone buying 2 of the same thing, I am sure she would understand.

or you could just buy something small and personalized for Bella to "open" on Christmas day. It's not like s he's going to remember the day anyway, and a personalized gift (and engraved bracelet?) could become a family heirloom for her. This way, you avoid the MIL situation, don't double up on things, and give your daughter something to cherish for the rest of her life, and maybe even pass on to her children. Just an idea.

Melanie,

That is an absolutely great idea.

Christmases are so extreme around here we have to exchange lists. My kids are the only grandkids on both sides and the grandparents are NUTS. So they try to figure out some presents on their own and keep me updated on what's been bought so I can pass the info and then as we get closer to Christmas time they ask me for ideas (because they never think they have enough). My mom is trying to beat us out of some nicer presents and has already bought Nikki the American Girl she wants and Jenny the AG bitty twins. It's like this every year. It used to really get on my nerves but I've gotten over it (I say that now, check back with me in a month or so, though ;o). Now I let them buy what they want but sometimes tell them some things are off limits so Santa can bring them.

So, to answer your question, I do not think it would be rude at all, just practical. If you're really worried about giving her ideas, why don't you start the conversation by asking what she was planning on getting, saying you're trying to plan your list and don't want to duplicate. You might find she already has what you want to recomend on her list or that she actually asks you for ideas.

I dont think it would be rude. My mom always clears it with me before she buys the boys gifts, to make sure they need or want what she's buying. It's usually easier that way because taking back gifts after the holidays is no fun!
