I found this on Yahoo Shine on how one mother allowed her child to ride in the back of a pick-up truck:

Never, ever on the road, but I've ridden in the back of a pickup truck on a farm while we were moving hay.

no way... maybe just riding back on BIL property but no, I'm all about seat belts and being inside the vehicle.

We were allowed to, but only on dirt roads, at low speeds, and we had to sit on our butts in the bottom. Not on the edge of the bed and not even on the wheel wells. I would probably let my kids do the same. I have known people who have been seriously injured and one who died from riding in the back of a pick up that was going too fast (even on a dirt road) and in at least one, I'm guessing alcohol was a factor. You have to be careful. I'm less worried about other traffic and more worried about the speed and responsibility of the driver of the pick up.

Was just surfing the boards and today was at a camp ceremony where a mom spoke because her son had done the camp years ago and was killed a month later trying to catch a dog falling out of the back of a pickup truck he and other teens were in. It was so sad:(

Never, ever would I allow my child to ride in the bed of a truck. Not even going slow on private property. It is against the law here and every time I see kids in the bed of pickup I dial our local highway patrol.

In fact, a woman was just put in jail for transporting an 8-month-old in it's stroller in the bed of a pickup here in Florida. She was smiling on the police video but I bet she hasn't smiled since.
