playground monitor is such a tough job, but this week it has been. Wednesday, a 1st grader was playing with a stick that was poking out of the ground. He let it go and it came back at him, and scratched his eye pretty good. Sent him into the office. About 10 mins. later, a 3rd grader came up to me and said, I'm bleeding Mrs. K., can I go to the office. I looked at him and OMG!! He was gushing blood from his ear lobe and behid his ear. I sent him in right away (DUH!). Found out that one of his classmates was waving a stick around (!) and stabbed him!!! It took a huge chunk out of his ear, his lobe looked pierced and there is a gouge behind his ear. Pretty serious. THEN, yesterday was a doozy. Two of the 4th graders came up to me and said that 2 other classmates were playing with matches in the woods (their school is surrounded by woods - a beautiful setting). First of all, what are they doing in there (that is off limits) and, are you sure they are playing with matches? I went over there and sure enough, I smelled smoke! They were burning candles and kleenex! I took them immediately to the office. I confiscated the matches, and their "tool kit" they brought from home. Then, I went and told the 2 girls who informed me that they did a good thing and that they were brave, for telling on their friends. That is a tough thing to do - I was very proud of them. Anyhow, I guess the least of my worries this week is the cold weather. Keep your fingers crossed that I have a quiet day on the playground today. I don't think I can handle anymore craziness. This is so unlike the students at this school to behave this way. It is a very snall school (about 100 students total) and in the 2 1/2 yrs I've been doing this, I've never come across a week like this.
Anyhow, thanks for letting me share.
Wendy
