Tuesday is my last day before the baby comes. I spent the last week training a sub for my maternity leave. She called Friday morning to tell me that, due to personal reasons, she would not be coming back! That leaves me two days to train someone new. It's not even a regular week - it's standardized testing. Oh, my. This transition may be a little rough....

We did hire someone Friday afternoon, and he'll be there Monday morning....but I'm still in a panic.

You'd think that the sub would have considered all of the pros and cons of a long-term assignment before accepting. Personal issues? Sounds more like second thoughts to me. It also sounds like the school probably won't trust her again unless they are in dire need of someone. Maybe you'll be better off with the second choice in the long run.

It will all work out. I had two of the worst subs ever for both of my leaves. The kids survived. Since you are testing this week, just go over the basics and then keep in contact after you leave. You might even arrange a meeting or two to continue to go over things and answer questions. Schedule update calls after that. If you approach it as a team effort he will probably be more comfortable and so will you. Good subs know they aren't there to take over and do everything their way. Regular contact will keep things on track and give you a lot less stress.

Best wishes,

Sherry

Oh my gosh! That is so wrong! I just wanted to say I'm sorry they left you in the lurch like that. It better have been one heck of a "personal reason". Not that I would wish anything bad upon a person, but otherwise I can't imagine bailing on a long-term assignment like that.

I hope your new sub is GREAT and that everything goes better than expected.

I love your ideas about keeping in contact. I think that will be best for everyone. Thanks for posting them - I will certainly use them!

The second sub called Saturday morning to say that he would also not be taking the job because he doesn't want to 'be out of the loop' in the regular district sub-line for that long. My boss was supposed to call this weekend if she found someone else, but I haven't heard from her.

I'm not really sure what the personal reasons are. I know that she just moved her a few months ago from another state. I know that she and her husband are trying to sell their house there and buy a new one here. It is possible that something else came up as well, because she said 'it all came to a head Thursday night.' On top of that, she was hit by a drunk driver on Thursday night, and it totaled her car (as far as I know, she was uninjured). Perhaps it is better that she didn't start the job and have to quit a week or two into it. KWIM?

I know this is awfully inconvenient for you and I hope you find someone capable before you leave. At least it sounds like your administrator is on top of this. I told my principal in July and they still haven't found anyone. (They only started looking last month and I teach upper-level Spanish -- not an easy position to fill anyway.) Good luck!

Egad! If I were in Colorado I would totally sub for you! Why the heck do these people accept the position if they aren't sure they can do it? Now I understand why I hear so many complaints about subs, if this is indicative of the level of "professionalism" normally displayed.

After spending all day with my boss looking at options, some guy walked in at 3pm with a completed application. My boss looked at it and said, "I think he's the one!" We have an interview with him this morning, on my last day of school. Keep your fingers crossed! I really hope this works out!

Thanks for the sub offer. I'd LOVE to have you in my room! :)

oh my gosh, i would have totally freaked if that had happened to me last semester. but things went well. though i will say that once i had baby and got home, i really didn't care too much about what was going on at school...but again, i had a good sub who i knew and trusted. i hope this guy works for you! don't stress out too much!!!
