Does he have a degree in a subject that could easily transition into certification? There are a lot of schools that offer transition programs that can be completed in a fairly short time. I don't know about NC, but there are some online programs that are accepted in many states.
I was in a great online program in Phoenix, AZ through Rio Salado College.
