Anyone with State test anxiety yet?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone is preparing for a state mandated test like we are in the South. I have to give a state modified test to low functioning students and it is very frustrating. Now I am required documentation to show I am teaching to this test. I am in a HS and have infant/toddler level students. This is frustrating and this is my 17 year teaching too.

Oh the joys of NCLB and accountability! Has anyone heard a logical explanation of why we are testing special needs students, English language learners, pre-school students and others that we know can't pass it? How does this improve their education? We know it sure stresses teachers and parents.

Canada isn't as bad as the states when it comes to standardized tests, but we're starting to get more. One big one HS teachers have to worry about is the Ontario Secondary Schools Literacy test. Students need to take it to graduate. Even though I'm only in teachers' college now, a student who I am private tutoring has to take it later this year. It's pretty scary, because I want her to do well, and I am afraid for myself if she doesn't.

My school didn't make AYP for the special ed students. Now, they all have to get advanced for us to get off the bad list. We are tutoring these kids like crazy after school, but I have a boy who is mildly mentally retarded (is that the word I should use? We just say he has a diagnosis of mild when I'm talking to the resource teachers) Anyway, he can't read 118 words a minute!

We just took the state writing test. Now we have to get the other district tests done by the end of March. Then, we can have fun and I can teach the stuff the students want to learn.

You made a good point when you said that you get to teach them relevant stuff that they want to learn starting in March.
