Applying for a position out of my certification field?

There are a number of job opening around my current location which are out of my certification field. I've known a few people who have been hired to fill a position in which they weren't certified but did so with the promise that they would get certified. The ones I'm looking at are in special education and I have some experience in teaching special ed kids since I was required to teach a few classes in which the entire class was made up of students with IEPs and my youngest step-daughter is special needs. I'm willing to do what I need to do to get the certification.

I just don't know if it's worth the effort. My niece did this and worked in SPED for a couple of years and gained her certification in SPED while doing it. However, she worked in a much more rural community than I do.

What do you ladies think? Is it worth my effort and time or should I banish the idea?

Special ed is an in-demand area almost everywhere. If you think you can handle it I say to go for it. Could you enroll in an online special ed course next semester or take a class over the summer? You could put that on the application and show certification in progress. That might help.
