Checking in with a brief update

It's been a while since I posted, but there hasn't been much for me to say about what's going on.

I received my notice of intent to non-renew my contract about a month ago. My union director saw no reason for me not to file for my due process hearing so I did. Tomorrow, I'm meeting her to pick up my personnel file from the district office and I meet with the lawyer handling my case on Monday afternoon.

I can't say that this has been a pleasant experience. I've managed to reach a point where I'm not breaking down everyday but it's still emotionaly and spiritually draining. I've applied for 4 different jobs but haven't got so much as an interview for any of them. The funding crisis in my state has many districts running scared so positions in my fields are few and far between. The ones that are posted are not in places that are close to me or in districts with good reputations.

I'm ready to have this entire thing over and done with already but the process appears to be taking some time.

Don't give up hope. Sometimes things seem dark and hopeless but in the long run you find a great bright light.

I'm glad you are starting to feel a little better. It really is so hard. I know because i went through something very similar. I'm starting to see openings for next year too. I have very mixed feeling about returning to k-12. I have options to work in places other than public/private schools but, the job market stinks everywhere. I've had 4 interviews over the space of a year. One of them was yesterday for a part time work-from-home position.
I wish you the best of luck. I hope somethings comes your way soon. I know it's hard to stay positive but, I wish you the best.

Thanks, ladies! I'm so grateful for this board.

I was in a completely disgusting funk yesterday when I posted that I forgot to mention the really good news in all of this: I've been accepted into graduate school at my alma mater. I'm very excited about taking classes again. I'll be working on my degree in Instructional Design and Technology. I figure it will make me a very marketable person to both schools and public and private companies. Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it. :smileyindifferent:

I don't know when I will have my hearing. I meet with the union lawyer for the first time next week. There are days when I'm ready to say, forget it, let the non-renewal stand, but then I remember that I'm doing this so that it won't happen to someone else.

My personnel file has some ugly things in it, but knowing the admin in my building, I'm not surprised. She's going to paint me in the worst possible light. I found at least one thing in my file that she never showed me. That could be a strike against her. The director thinks we may have one more strike against her but we won't know until we go over everything with the lawyer on Monday.

If nothing else, I could easily substitute next year until I find something else. Most districts around here pay well for subs.

Public education is beginning to be a scary place. I often wonder: How did it get where it is now? Why was it allowed to get here? When will it stop?

Check your evaluation policy very carefully. In most of them informal evaluations must still be discussed with the teacher in a timely manner just like formal evaluations. All I've ever worked with allow the teacher to make a written response that must accompany the evaluation form.. If your admin put in some things that you didn't get the opportunity to see and respond to that could be a big deal.

Good to hear from you...I'm glad there is a bit of good in the situation (grad school). I wish you the best in the hearing. Let us know how it goes.

Take Care, Judy
