We've covered this topic several times and sadly the predictions are about the same.

I know it's really tough out there but, 10 applicants for every opening does not seem bad at all. This summer I read an article in the New York Times that said that there were HUNDREDS of applicants for each opening in the NY area for elementary school jobs. I think I'd jump for joy if I knew I had to compete against only 9 other people.
I often wonder how many people applied for the jobs I applied for. I got a rejection email over the summer from a college library that I applied to. It was a part time job and the sender did not hide the names of the ppl that she sent the email to. I counted that she sent the rejection to 35 people so I'm assuming about 40 people applied for this job and it was only part time!
I know how discouraging this can be, believe me I do. I was unemployed for 18 months and my current job is just a long term sub position for now. As Sherry said, just keep plugging along. It's all you can do. Maybe try to branch out what you would consider. I know how you feel. Right now I'm holding my breath. I might be back in the job market in the spring.
