Look into Ruby Payne and her research into the framework of poverty. She offers some information on how to educate students who live in generational poverty.

I agree. Ruby Payne offers the how-to part and is more current than many of the others.

I also think that a lot of the problems with the inner city children is their home life.

Like others have said look into to Ruby Payne. I have taken a workshop by her and it does outline strategies to teach students in poverty and how to react to situtions you might face in urban areas.
