I am for merit pay, but you are right, there needs to be a specific criteria, not linked to one test score or grades. Maybe a pre- and post- assessment of 'something.'

I also know that charter schools can be great things. Or stink. So can public schools.

I also believe that tenure laws MUST be revamped. There has to be a lengthy procedure to help, and ultimately get rid of inadequate teachers.

As it currently exists merit pay is too political. With that I also feel that we have to do something to encourage the best and brightest to enter teaching and stay in the field. We get too many who aren't qualified and those that care often give up because they get to little support and reward for all they do. Merit pay for leadership and service might work. Test scores alone won't do as we all know.

Charter schools can work, we have a great charter HS in my community, but we all know that for-profit schools work a lot like merit pay. The emphasis is often on the wrong things, like test scores and good parent PR,

I guess I had to disagree with him sometime and man does it pain me to do so. Merit pay sucks to high heaven. Tests scores are not a measure of a good teacher. It just means the kids can pass a test. Please, I know for a fact one of my colleagues cheats on her tests. Her kids are hardly ever on the honor roll, but test 3 grade levels above on standardized tests. Give me a break!! Still love him though!! Still my dream man!! Just a little misguided!! He's never taught so he will never really know.

Yep! I'm not even a teacher yet and I know that. I once heard or read that evaluating a teacher based on their students' test scores is like evaluating a dentist based on the number of cavities in their patients.

Merit pay is horrible because it's either too political or based off of test scores.
