Help! Anyone know geometry?

First time here.  My husband & I live near NYC.  I'm posting this on behalf of my husband who teaches high school Math in a NYC public school.  The issue is he's trying to come up with problems that involve coordinates, squares or sq. ft. that relate to the real world.  In other words, his students are mostly from low income households & mostly minorities so their view of learning geometry is "why do I have to learn this stuff, I'm never going to use it & it's a waste of time."  That said, these same students have to pass state exams & finals and my husband needs to come up with real world examples that use coordinates, graphing, etc.  Something that these kids can relate to.

Since I haven't used geometry since high school, I'm not useful in coming up with some problems.  Anybody here can provide some ideas?

Maps, GPS, construction, laying tiles, making a deck, fitting furniture through a door, installing a rug, buying a door, putting on baseboards, determining the amount of paint/wall paper....

I am not a math person either, but could you maybe look in the fields of construction, engineering, and structural engineering?  Maybe talk to someone who works in construction and ask how such math might be used there.  Actually, my nephew is studying construction technology in college.  I'll send him a message and ask if he ever uses geometry-type problems.

Express!

P.S. I am a musician, and could explain to you in great length how math and music theory work together!

Hi, Kathy! Welcome. We have one math teacher who posts here now and then. I'm not sure if she lurks and checks in regularly but if so I hope she responds to your request. Math is not my thing, but I wish I could help. AuntieJo are you there???
