Did any of you happen to catch this Washington Post article on teachers making home visits?

As a parent I love it. As long as its not stressful to the teacher.

One of the neighboring counties that has a county-wide district does it. They announce a day just before school starts and try to visit each home. I haven't talked to anyone involved so I don't know how well it is received by teachers or parents. They've only done it for the last couple of years. It looks like getting to everyone would be very difficult in just one day.

There's no way I would want to do this. I teach two very different populations. The ones who are involved parents have no problem coming to conferences. The ones who aren't, that I would have to visit, would be very unsettling and unsafe for me.

Years ago I taught alternative education for aggressive and violent youth. We were required to do home visits. It was enlightening, to say the least. Scary to say the most. We always went in pairs, always one male and one female.

I would have no issues do it again.
