How do you lend support...

to co-workers who have been RIFed? We found out yesterday that three staff members have not been re-hired for next year and their positions either completely eliminated or cut to half-time. In a way, it wasn't surprising that positions have been cut or reduced because our state is in a huge deficit (which I am sure many states are also) but on the other hand, it was surprising because our building is already down three teachers already.

I've never been in this sort of position before, and I know that our teacher association is giving them support but I can't say that I know exactly what to do for them or quite what to say.

I've been there when co-workers were RIFfed and it's not good. I think you have to try to help them think positively, encourage and help them start a successful job search, and help them with networking. Of course all of this comes if they want and allow it. You can't force yourself on them. Let them know you're there, offer specific help such as proofing their resume or sources of job listings. Keep it casual and don't ask every day how it's going.

Thanks for the suggestions! Your ideas pretty much were ones I thought about offering. Two of them are veteran teachers and one is a second-year teacher who has had a really, really rough year: She separated from her husband of 6 months in September, lost her grandfather in December and then filed for divorce from her husband just last month. Talk about major stress!

The veterans will probably have a bigger problem finding another job because they are higher on the salary scale. The second year might be OK if she can hold it together and interview well.

I'm not sure if they could be rehired or not. The budget situation isn't looking very good currently, but things could certainly change. There's a board meeting on Monday and several of us are going to attend because our local teacher association in on the agenda.
