Hi everyone,

The reason that I ask how well you do/don't like teaching is because I'm heading back to school this fall to pursue my degree and finally become a teacher. I plan on getting certified Prek-6. So, I'd love to know what do you teach, how long have you taught, and how do you like it? thanks!

Hello Susan and welcome to the board. I've taught all ages of students from young children to adults in a career of almost 30 years. I currently teach teachers and love it. In an elementary classroom I prefer grades 3-6 because of the new ideas and events that you work with. You can still excite them with something new and fascinating much more easily than when they are older. I don't like working with most teen-agers today. There are just too many bad attitudes and they lack respect and effort. I know many would disagree with me becasue we all have our preferences and niches. You just have to see what works for you.

Most teahers will tell you that the "light bulb" moments are the best. When a student finally gets it after a long srtuggle, you know that it's worth it. There are also the cute notes, comments, and hugs that you get from the younger ones. Once in a while a parent really compliments you. Someday you will have a student come back years later to say how much you helped them. All of these things add up to make teaching arewarding career.

Good luck with you new career. Let us know if we can help you out in any way.

Hi, I've taught 5th and 6th grade for 5 years. I subbed middle school for 2 years previous. I enjoy teaching. My favorite part is "teaching", I love being on stage. I love finding new and exciting stuff to present to the kids. I don't like the paperwork/correcting, so I always seem to be behind. I also enjoy 3-6. I don't have the patience for the little ones or the right attitude for the bigger 'kids'. Others do, though, and that's why each of us has to find the right niche.

Good luck! Tamie
