Okay, hurricane update - pay attention...LOL

We're on Jeanne now, this incidentially is number FOUR, of our lovely hurricanes to hit within the last two months. Do you realize only ONE weekend have I NOT gone out to buy water and restock supplies...that's just a side note. EVERY hurricane has intersected our county. This one was the worst. We have just shingles down, but others haven't been as fortunate from downed fences, no electricity, water and many homes, businesses and schools have been damaged. Lives are devestated. BUT somehow we persevere. One lady said God does not give us more than we can handle, well unfortunately many are at their limit. We anticipate that most of our Christmas holiday will be gone this year, which isn't going over well with all. We are trying to get our standardized testing postponed or eliminated for the year. We'd prefer eliminated. So many people are at an all time stress high that these days of teaching aren't as productive as they could be. To evaluate kids based on the craziness of this year isn't fair. Not to mention the stress on teachers to perform to "meet the grade".

Whew...just a rough hurricane season. Yes, and Karl and Lisa are out in the Atlantic waiting to visit Florida. My suggestion, just keep crusing on the high seas...Florida is done.

Do you get tired of hearing, "It could have been worse?"

I'm personally on a mission to get everyone in Florida to email Jeb Bush and tell him to get rid of the standardized testing this year. I've emailed him myself a quite extensive letter. When we return to school, which is going to be next Monday...you better believe I'm going to get everyone of my 120 students to email him. We're fed up and he's gotta know it and there are considerations he may have not even thought of..for example, if a kid doesn't pass standardized testing he/she will fail and maybe not graduate REGARDLESS of his/her grade point average. Okay, that same kid has NOT had sufficient time in school with preparation AND may have home damage or no home etc....stress stress stress. That is not fair.

It's so difficult to teach...then stop...then go back...then stop. It is constantly revisiting and reviewing. I feel like I haven't completed anything and we just started in August. All in all, my kids have been good, but I know some teachers who have real discipline issues because what have kids been doing on this break - watching tv, playing play station - all unsupervised and then they have to subject themselves to discipline.

It's a real stressful situation all around.

So, if anyone wants to email ole Gov. Jeb Bush - please do: jeb.bush@myflorida.com

Thanks, D

Thanks for the address. I'm sure there are a lot of us who have some opinions to express on this issue. We might try Congress and the White House too!

Thanks...I agree...if not only to have a "teachable moment" and show students that since we are fortunate to live in a democracy that we are free to share our opinions with those that represent us. Moreover, those that represent us in politics need to know the people have a right to be heard - no matter what the circumstances are and no matter how old you are. We are a country for the people...and by the people. (Yes, I know that may sound sappy...) :)
