I love reading to my students!!!!!

I am completely shocked at this, but my students seem to really enjoy being read to, and it makes me sooooo relaxed to read to them. And, by the way, I'm 7th grade math!

I brought Math Curse to school this week, and read parts of it with 3 of my 6 classes. It's funny and they seemed to enjoy it.

Then, today, I had a circle/angle activity stolen from a math conference using Shel Silverstein's Missing Piece. I read the book, then they created a "Missing" or "Wanted" poster for their missing pieces, which they created from paper plates. There will be a follow-up activity that involves them "finding" their missing piece that is mixed up with the whole period's missing pieces using their poster and their knowledge of circles and angles.

They were all VERY calm and relaxed (and seated & quiet) as I read the book to them. And I found that I was very relaxed, too!

Just wanted to share!

I discovered that many MS and some HS classes liked it when I read to them. I honestly think it takes them somewhere they've never been. Sad, but true. So many quit reading by upper elementary. Many have never learned to really love reading. Even if they have been recreational readers other things take their time and interest. Maybe you will awaken their interest. Good work!
