Lurker with a question: PREK teachers

I always read through the posts but don't really respond. It is always an interesting read, though. =) I have a few questions.

  1. Do you feel PREK teachers are "real" teachers?

  2. Do you see a difference among children who went to PREK vs children who didn't?

  3. Are children prepared for school today as much as they were in years past or do you feel we prepare them better now?

I don't man to barge in with this but I've had some struggles and have been doing a lot of thinking. I would really like to hear what you alll think given your experiences. =) TIA!

Hi,
I taught prek for 11 years but am now teaching 1st grade. Loved it but just needed a change. Prek teachers are ABSOLUTELY real teachers!!! Prek teachers don't always get the respect they deserve. Some people view them as glorified babysitters. But those who know how hard we work and how valuable the work we do is, know the truth. I work in a primary school with a prek and I do see a difference in the kids who came to school for prek and the ones who didn't.

I think that the standards for kindergarten are now what used to be first grade- just what I have seen in the area where I teach. There is so much expected of the children now so it is even harder to have them ready if they do not attend prek. I do think if a parent is reading and talking with their children, engaging them in meaningful activities at home, providing opportunities for social interactions with peers, they can be just as prepared. However, many kids just spend way too much time in front of a tv or playing video games.

So, that's my opinion. Why are you struggling? Are you feeling unappreciated? Just know that you are making a difference by providing a quality experience for the first year of school for these children. Good luck!
