My first week in 2nd grade...

It has been exciting! First of all, we are still waiting for our portable classrooms to be finished. Two second grade classes are supposed to be in them - so I have been sharing my classroom with another second grade class/teacher. It's been a little hard to plan since it is temporary - we would be planning differently if we were going to be teaming the whole year. It is getting a bit crowded - we are up to 17 students each. My room will seem so big once they move out. They are telling us the work will be done on Tuesday - they will probably be in my room for all of next week though.

Still it has been a good opening week. I have a really good class. No major behavior problems - just some talking, impulse control, and trouble staying on task. No violent, emotianally handicapped, or mentally ill students. Talking to the other teachers, I have a fairly high class: 6 were above grade level on reading, 5 on level, 5 below. I have one that I'm really concerned about - he can read words but he can not write at all. On the spelling inventory - he got one initial consonant correct and that was it - the rest was pure giberish including numbers, upside down letters and made-up characters. He also doesn't know ANY math. I gave them an "assessing readiness for 2nd grade" test and he could not answer one question. I read it to them so it wasn't reading that was the problem. He's ELL and already a year older than 2nd grade - I will definitely be referring him for interventions and possible special ed.

I LOVE the school where I am working. The administration is so awesome. I like all the teachers. I think it will be a good year. Stephanie

It sounds like you're doing a great job, and pretty lucky, even with the inconvenience and crowded classroom.
