My DH and I are going to TTC starting in June, then I start my student teaching end of Aug/Sep and graduate in Dec. We were thinking that if we don't get pg in June or July, then start preventing pg until the new year (so I don't have to experience my 1st trimester while student teaching. Did any of you student teach while pg? What are your thoughts. Am I being selfish, and should continue not to prevent, and let it happen during internship or not? We would like to start our family soon because we would like to have more than 2 children, also we would be considering me staying home until fall 07.

I'm not sure if you'd consider it the same experience, but I started the new school year during the first trimester with both of mine. Both were spring babies, and I taught the whole year. I did have pretty easy pregnancies. With my first daughter I was off two weeks and came back to finish the last week of school, do records, etc.

I don't know of anyone who's student taught while pregnant, but I'd think it would be a challenge. It's a big transition. You think you know what's coming, but you really don't.

I didn't student teach during my first trimester, but I did during my second (or was it third?)I was pretty big, anyway. It went fine - But I had an easy pregnancy. Actually, being pg really helped build up rapport with all the teachers in the building and honestly, probably because it was so easy, well, it accentuated my "sunnier" side it was a very happy and joyful time for me. I felt extra energy, although I will say that my first trimester hit me like a ton of bricks with fatigue.

I actually taught summer school while in my 1st trimester and it wasn't too bad other than insatiable hunger and having to go to the bathroom a lot between classes. Whatever your choice is, just make sure you're prepared for the dr's appointments and whatnot. See if your doctor has hours after school hours or on saturdays. I had my little man Feb 2005 and the worst part of teaching while pregnant was the bathroom not being close enough and having enough breaks for it, eating all of the time (I was so hungry!!!), and the dr appointments taking a chunk out of my school day. Other than that, it was fine for me and this pregnancy was rather uneventful too. I would talk to DH and your dr to get opinions and then really see what you want and need. Teaching & breastfeeding isn't fun but I did it for 14 months and survived!
Best of luck!!
