No Jeans for Teachers
Tue, 01-17-2012 - 2:31pm

A New York elementary school principal has just recently banned teachers from wearing jeans. The principal says that the handbook calls for "professional attire," and he's clarified that jeans, flip-flops, and gym clothes are not considered professional. Some teachers think that banning jeans is taking it too far.

This is a tough one because of several considerations. As noted

This is not all that unusual. Many school districts have dress codes. We were not allowed to wear jeans or sneakers to school in my last district. About once a month we were allowed to wear jeans on Friday. I DO think that teachers should dress nicely and jeans can look very sloppy but I don't think that there should be rigid rules about dress.

We have the option of wearing jeans on Fridays if we contribute $2 to our in-house student charity program.

We can only wear jeans on Fridays with school spirit wear. Honestly, I feel more productive on those days. The rest of the week, our dress code is professional.

Part time college professor, no jeans for me. Jeans are for casual wear, not work wear in my world.

Big part of that is from going to a college prep boarding school from 6th grade on that had a strict formal dress code. Jeans were once a month at most for school.
