Have you seen this article or others like it? A new study claims that test taking helps students recall info better than other types of studying.

"Taking a test is not just a passive mechanism for assessing how much people know, according to new research. It actually helps people learn, and it works better than a number of other studying techniques."

Read the whole article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/science/21memory.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hpw

I'd like to have more details on what kinds of tests they were and how they were constructed.

I agree with you. There are some tests that are a game to pass and some that actually assess what you learn. I prefer giving students an essay to write detailing information than giving them a multiple choice thing. You get a greater insight into how they understand the information rather than just if they know the basics. But that's just me - a simple English teacher. :)

Well it seems that it depends on the topic and the goal.

This makes me think of the tests I took in musicology classes in undergrad and grad work.
