My favorite quote about standardized tests is "Weighing a pig doesn't fatten it." I personally think standardized testing is destroying education.

I'm surrounded by research and researchers in higher ed. I've never seen anything reliable that indicates that testing improves real learning skills or understanding of a topic.

I refuse to teach to the test - if my students are learning, then a quality test will reflect their success. And my classes make consistent gains every year. The only problem I have is the "drill and kill" approach to tests, where teachers abandon their curriculum in favor of teaching to the test.

I can't say I've ever seen a standardized test that could be considered "quality."

Good point! The reason I say "quality" is that I co-wrote our district standardized tests with my department, and it took us nearly all year to get it the way we want it. That's the only test I really examine when it comes to scores.
