Survived Opening Day

Well, well, we lived to tell about it.
As far as I could tell, it was a routine opening day. Our office staff seemed a little stressed, though, and the dignitaries (Sp?) from the central office finally decided to show up this afternoon. Some of our classes are big, but that can happen even if you haven't had 100+ new kids transfer to your school in the last 2 weeks.
One of our science teachers was complaining about having 28 in her class. My 4th grader has 29 in his class at his parochial school. The difference would be, though, that last night 28 of the 29 kids in my son's class had parents show up for Open House, and the other 1 had a prior committment. You wouldn't quite find that percentage of support at the school I teach at.
I have 12 kids so far in my resource class. One is under House Arrest and sporting a nice Martha Stewart ankle bracelet. Another just got out of detention yesterday for breaking and entering.
My assistant is in charge of ID pictures so we had a steady stream of new kids in our classroom today getting ID's. Chatting with them, this has been a great opportunity for them. They are thrilled to be at our school. A few seemed sad.
We'll see how things shake out as time goes by.
