This week was Teachers' Appreciation Week.
Over the years I've seen fewer and fewer parents and students take the time to say thanks or do something special. It's extremely rare in higher ed where I've been for the past six years. The special weeks and days just aren't recognized.
Locally I haven't seen anything in the news about special events for Teacher Appreciation Week. Since our state legislature just passed a whole group of education laws that were promoted through the vilification of teachers and schools I doubt if there is a lot of interest in honoring teachers. The whole environment is very negative. Sad!
In Idaho where I reside, Tom Luna is all about punishing the teachers.
I'm a high school teacher and although I didn't receive an personal "thanks" the different clubs in the school did nice things for the whole faculty like breakfast two days, handed out candy bars one day and our administration arranged a catered lunch for us one day. It was thoughtful and appreciated.
My own 2 elementary aged daughter's wrote "thank-you's" for each of their teachers.....including non-core like P.E. and librarian :) We attached them to jumbo sized chocolate bars. It wasn't much but I hope they appreciated the personal note and enjoyed their treat.
