You might want to talk with your parents and see how they will cover your expenses.

When I went to school, my parents paid for my rent, phone (basic service fees) and electricity as the bill came in. On top of that they gave me an "allowance" that was to cover eating out, groceries, clothes and entertainment. I think it was about $175 back in the early 90s, things have gotten a lot more expensive since then.

Are you living off campus? Will you have a meal plan? Being in Canada I would imagine that your entertainment expenses might be higher since you can drink at 18 - here we had to go to keg parties. Pretty cheap night out.

My best advice is to start on the lower side of what you think you will need and learn how to budget/save. It really helps when you get out in the real world.

Have fun!

I don't know how different things are in Canada, but in CA above and beyond all of your expenses (rent, utilities, phone bill, car payment, etc.), you'd probably need around 300/month, if you will live pretty moderately. Meaning you eat out every now and then but mostly cook at home, and if you go out to a movie or whatever every now but not every night. That will give you just enough to live comfortably, but not extravagantly. If you want to have more/nicer things I'd say around 500/month, and if you plan to save like crazy I'd say you could survive with about 150/month, you just wouldn't have much to spend on anything extra above and beyond food.
