I know I won't be able to keep a journal, but thought I'd make some random notes here.

I'm eliminating one bad habit a week for the first few weeks, then planning to go on Weight Watchers.

Last week I stopped drinking alcohol during the week. After Monday, this was not a problem at all. I drank milk or seltzer with dinner, even on the weekend. Had a couple of beers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but less than I had been when I was drinking during the week. So that was good - I don't need beer or wine with dinner, it was just a habit I'd fallen into.

This week I decided to tackle my second-worst habit, actually harder to break: munching on salty snacks. It's become common for me to have a few mini-pretzels in the morning, chips at lunch, chips or Doritos in the afternoon, and pretzels or goldfish when I got home. That one hasn't been as hard as I thought, though I caved and had a few mini pretzels before lunch today. I expect it will be much harder next week, when I give up cookies and candy - then I won't have any little vices to fall back on!

I measured myself this morning, because I felt much smaller than I did last Friday. My bust measurement is down by a whole inch, so I'm sure it was just water retention. I feel more like myself, and my tops aren't so tight now (whew!).

It's been two weeks. I've done a good job of eliminating two major bad habits of mine, drinking alcohol Monday through Thursday and eating salty snacks Monday through Friday. A couple of slipups on the salty snacks, but nothing devastating, and no overloading on the weekend so far (more than normal, anyway ;)).

This week is the tough one - eliminating cookies, candy, and other sweets from my weekdays. I probably had a few more of these this past week when I took away the chips and pretzels. But mostly, I know, those things are just habits, not real cravings.

I'm making the exception for Tuesday. It will be my 45th birthday, so I expect cake and wine to be part of my celebration. :)

Well, this was unexpected. I figured I'd have cake and wine on my birthday - we always celebrate people's birthdays at the office. Today, however, we are celebrating my colleague's birthday (and then tomorrow we will celebrate mine!). I guess I will skip my South Beach diet bar for my afternoon snack, and have cake for my friend's birthday instead. I really don't want to draw attention to myself, even though everyone would be nice and supportive.

Today is the first REAL test of where I am in my progress. The week of 9/3, I gave up alcohol during the week. The week of 9/10, salty snacks. This week, sweets - except that I had birthday celebrations both Monday & Tuesday, which of course necessitated eating cake! So today is the first day that I am abstaining entirely from alcohol, salty snacks, AND sweets. It's had its rocky moments, but I expect that after the next day or so, I'll be comfortable with it.

Then, hopefully, it's on to Weight Watchers next week. If that seems premature, I'll just keep this up for another week before WW.

I caved and had a small piece of birthday cake last night. It was too hard not to - we were having a nice family dinner, no one wanted to leave the table because we were all talking and laughing, and the kids brought out yesterday's cake. Oh well. It was just a small piece. On the bright side - this is what I hoped for when I thought of having a family - me, my husband, and my kids sitting around laughing and having fun together.

I've done well in other areas. No beer, wine, chips, pretzels, Doritos, cookies, candy, etc. I did have a few Wheat Thins yesterday afternoon because I was working late and was hungry, but just in case that counted as a salty snack, I brought in a piece of string cheese today, since I know I'll be working late again.

Today I managed to get up early enough to spend a whole hour at the gym before work. That's always my intention, but the reality is more like 45 mins. Since I have only been going 2 days a week instead of my planned 4 days a week, that's a big difference. I had a great upper body workout and then spent 15 mins on my abs and back. Because of my herniated discs, I should be doing that 3-4 times a week instead of 10 mins twice a week. Thanks to my cortisone shots, my back feels fine after all that work. Whoo hoo!
