Where is everybody?

It sure is quiet in here! I guess everybody is busy having summer fun?

I finally decided that I need to get back in control of my eating. My weight has increased only slightly but I can see that my belly is increasing (since menopause that's where I store more fat)---since the scale is much the same that makes me worry that I'm losing muscle. Anyway, a few days ago I signed up on Sparks.com to use the Nutrition Tracker so I can really see how much I am consuming.

So far its been interesting to see how unbalanced my diet is sometimes--and this is with me trying to make good choices and avoiding junk and sweets! Then last night we went to a dinner party, and while everything served was fairly healthy and I tried to exercise good portion control the calories went through the roof. (I couldn't even guess at how to enter a few things in the nutrition tracker and without them my calories were still way too high). So today is back to trying to make good choices.

I'm also trying to get my exercise routine shaped up (pun inteneded!). I cycle regularly, typically 3 times a week, but somehow its getting harder to get an aerobic workout there. According to my HR monitor I'm burning about 350 or more calories each session but apparently its not enough! I also do a lot of gardening which involves bending and squatting and a lot of walking around but I guess that only helps to keep my joints moving. I need to somehow up the intensity on the bike, add in a strength training routine a couple of times a week and do some ab work too.

So, I'm back at it. If anybody wants to join me I'd love the company and support. Wish me luck!

Been busy traveling this summer.  Got out of school June 15'th and a short while later we are in the car heading for Florida.  Spent a week with my SIL in Florida, and then heading to Hilton head for 3 days.  Then home.  A little over a week later we are heading to Vermont for my nephew's wedding.  Spent a lot of time taking Lizzie to her friend's house to swim and hang out, and we spent each Friday in August visiting colleges with her.  Seems like the summer just flew by!

Wow, you were busy! When does school start back in your area? Will you be the school nurse again this year?

How is your thyroid stuff going, have you been able to get the meds dosage adjusted so you're feeling good?

Lizzie is looking at colleges...my how time flies! Is she entering 11th or 12th grade? Does she want to be near to home or far away, or no preference as long as she likes the campus and they have her major? What does she *think* she wants to declare for her major?

How is Mike doing?

Hey there!  School started today, and my first assignment as the sub school nurse comes on September 7'th.  I already have a lot of jobs offered through September and October so I think this will be a busy year yet again.  Last year I worked 110 days out of 180......not bad for a sub/extra nurse.  Dave continues to travel at least 2 days a week, so the extra work days keep me busy when he isn't around!

Thyroid stuff is going great!  Last test said that I am cancer free, and I have had the meds adjusted and I'm feeling good!  There was a disagreement between my PCP and my endo about my dosage and my blood work, but I went with the endo's recommendation and just added extra calcium to my supplements instead of changing my dose.  My endo wants me to be as suppressed as possible so I am on a higher dose of thyroid meds, but it was decreasing my calcium levels.  The best way for me to stay cancer free is to stay highly suppressed for 5 years.   Since the calcium is the only symptom that I have, I am just taking 2 tabs with lunch and 2 tabs with dinner.  It's working and my calcium levels went up.

Lizzie started school today.  She is a junior.  She would like to go to school somewhere near home where she could drive in an hour or 2.  We wanted her to get the experience of just seeing colleges and college life, and thinking about what she wants.  She wants to be a chemical engineer major or some type of science major, and is looking at schools that have both majors.  We showed her a small private school, a large public school, a larger private school, and a larger out of state school.  We still have 1 more school to visit in October.  It was also good for her to see what kind of scholarships that some schools gave for her GPA and SAT scores to motivate her to keep her grades up.....and get ready for that SAT test in the spring!

Mike has been working at Radio Shack for 10 months.  At first he liked the work (between black friday and the holidays his paychecks were huge), but now things have slowed down, they have had a lot of people quit, and he is working 7 days a week and isn't as thrilled with it as much, and has decided that he wants to go back to school, and study chemistry at the community college, and either get a job in that or head to a 4 year school later and study chemical engineering.  He is now taking 1 class.....the dreaded English class that he has failed multilpe times because he lost interest in it and quit going to class.....which he paid for....and we are waiting out the semester holding our breaths to see if he is really interested in going....or if this is just a phase of he is bored and wants to change jobs.  He is living at home, and we are continuing to teach him how to be independent.....and right now his spending vs. income is a big issue (another reason he wants to go back to school).  It's been a challenge....but hopefully well worth it in the end!

So how are things with you going!  Hopefully well!  So good to hear from you and update you on what is going on in my sometimes crazy life!
