Carole's West Coast Drama Report...

(Insert typewriter tapping here...HA! ;) )

Most of my drama is coming from ivillage over the last couple days...but I will say that I think it's pretty hilarious how much I've been tweaking about not being able to get here and check in.  I'm a WoW addict for sure.  I am also definitely a creature of habit.  Check facebook.  Check WoW.  Play logoquiz.  lol.

The problem child student was not in class all week.  She's been in communication with my boss but I'm not sure if we've gotten our training materials and products back from her yet.  I have to say I am so relieved that she won't be coming back!  And we didn't even really have to use all the documentation with her since she missed so many days of class.  My other student managed to pick up a nasty cold.  He was a trooper and came in on Wednesday and did 3 massages but I could tell he was really drained at the end of the day.  He called me early the next morning and sounded awful.  He was out today too which worked out really well actually.  My boss was stressing out a little about how she was going to get the work done that she needed to and teach the material for the day (it was originally slated as a practice day but we are a day behind...well, now two).  He's doing really well thoguh and now that it's just him, we have more flexibility with the schedule.

The really big news though...Carole, are you listening?  My boss said she is submitting a proposal to bring me on full time starting in 2013!  I'm hoping, praying, selling my soul for this to go through.  lol.  I still feel like I might miss the spa but I know that there is so much more that I could be doing for the education program.  I feel like I've really turned a corner in the last month or so (I've turned a lot of corners this year it seems...hopefully, I don't get lost!) as far as teaching style.  Suddenly with this class I've strayed from the bullet points and it's become much more organic and conversational.  I've been really paying attention to people whose speaking style I like and find dynamic and trying to apply it to how I speak and teach.  It feels GOOD!  :)  I'm finding that it's found it's way into how I'm speaking to my clients too.  Today, for example, I found myself recommending thigs like I'm Steve Jobs introducing the first ipod...lol.  It was really fun and my clients got really excited about everything too.  I sold a couple products and got a few new clients to re-book with me.  One of the things that stuck out to me from the Strictly Business seminar I attended earlier this year was a simple phrase that said, "If you're not getting the response you want, change the way you do it/say it."  It took me awhile to figure out how to apply that but I think I've got it.  And now that I can apply it and I see that it works, I can teach it...and hopefully my students will get it too. :)

I really see our training evolving to include a section on communication.  It's not effective to make recommendations to someone if you can't do it/say it confidently.  But massage therapists a lot of times confuse confident with pushy.  It's going to be tricky and tough to teach something like that but I really believe to my core that it will make a HUGE difference in how our department performs.  So I am working here and there on developing that part of the curriculum and I think that once I have a good solid something I will be able to present it and get it approved to add into the core training.

I am trying to make my presence even more known...I don't think the people above my boss really understand how much I am able to contribute beyond just teaching.  I am hoping to prove that I can do much more than that (be careful what I wish for, right?) so they will have one more reason to bring me onboard full time. ;)

I'm Sarah, and this has been your West Coast Drama Report. (music play out...lol)

I like the communication idea. So much of our world and relationships depend on effective communication and so many of us are not adept at it for one reason or another. I think it is something needs to be stressed at every level!

ROFL! Thanks Sarah!! OH I do hope your boss will be able to persuade her bosses that they really need you full time on educating - you so obviously love it, and IMHO someone who loves what they do is able to spark others to love it too. I think you will miss the Spa if you don't work there at all, and I also think that working there occasionally is a good way for you to stay in touch with what's happening outside the classroom. However, the flip side of that is just having one "job" to concentrate on will be a lot easier than trying to split yourself between 2 jobs. Maybe there's a way to combine mostly educating with a week or 2 every so often back at the spa honing your "hands-on" skills. Maybe holiday coverage for other massage therapists?

It's so true Molly.  I think so many problems could be avoided if people knew how to communicate effectively.  And not just speaking but LISTENING actively...not composing your next response while the other is speaking.  It's something I strive to do and I wish others would too!

Haha, you're welcome Carole. ;)

I have thought about a lot of different solutions to the "miss the spa" aspect...and it's not just that I'd miss the work, but I have a lot of regulars that I have developed a relationship with (professionally of course) that I would be leaving too.  It's already tough when I am only there 2 days a week (if I am there at all) to get everyone in.  But I think with some good communication I could get them all either transferred to a couple days a month or introduce them to other therapists that I think they'll like.  I have a couple that outright refuse to see anyone else and while I'm flattered I wish they'd at least give someone a try!  It's always good to have options!

It's fun to apply what I'm teaching to my practice and see that it works...validating for sure. :)

Thanks Geo...I really love that I can spread my wings a little bit and have the support of my boss.  I think she's happy too as she keeps getting more and more piled onto her plate so anything I can to to help, I do.  :)

I do love it.  I think about everything I've managed to accomplish in the last couple years (the last 5 or 6 years really) and I can't help but feel proud. Never in a million years did I think I'd be where I am now.  It's such an amazing opportunity to grow every day. Both professionally and personally!

Thanks Elaine!  I hope so too!  It would be great to have a Monday through Friday position...although I suspect there would be an occasional weekend day in there too.

Fingers crossed!
