(Insert typewriter tapping here...HA! ;) )
Most of my drama is coming from ivillage over the last couple days...but I will say that I think it's pretty hilarious how much I've been tweaking about not being able to get here and check in. I'm a WoW addict for sure. I am also definitely a creature of habit. Check facebook. Check WoW. Play logoquiz. lol.
The problem child student was not in class all week. She's been in communication with my boss but I'm not sure if we've gotten our training materials and products back from her yet. I have to say I am so relieved that she won't be coming back! And we didn't even really have to use all the documentation with her since she missed so many days of class. My other student managed to pick up a nasty cold. He was a trooper and came in on Wednesday and did 3 massages but I could tell he was really drained at the end of the day. He called me early the next morning and sounded awful. He was out today too which worked out really well actually. My boss was stressing out a little about how she was going to get the work done that she needed to and teach the material for the day (it was originally slated as a practice day but we are a day behind...well, now two). He's doing really well thoguh and now that it's just him, we have more flexibility with the schedule.
The really big news though...Carole, are you listening? My boss said she is submitting a proposal to bring me on full time starting in 2013! I'm hoping, praying, selling my soul for this to go through. lol. I still feel like I might miss the spa but I know that there is so much more that I could be doing for the education program. I feel like I've really turned a corner in the last month or so (I've turned a lot of corners this year it seems...hopefully, I don't get lost!) as far as teaching style. Suddenly with this class I've strayed from the bullet points and it's become much more organic and conversational. I've been really paying attention to people whose speaking style I like and find dynamic and trying to apply it to how I speak and teach. It feels GOOD! :) I'm finding that it's found it's way into how I'm speaking to my clients too. Today, for example, I found myself recommending thigs like I'm Steve Jobs introducing the first ipod...lol. It was really fun and my clients got really excited about everything too. I sold a couple products and got a few new clients to re-book with me. One of the things that stuck out to me from the Strictly Business seminar I attended earlier this year was a simple phrase that said, "If you're not getting the response you want, change the way you do it/say it." It took me awhile to figure out how to apply that but I think I've got it. And now that I can apply it and I see that it works, I can teach it...and hopefully my students will get it too. :)
I really see our training evolving to include a section on communication. It's not effective to make recommendations to someone if you can't do it/say it confidently. But massage therapists a lot of times confuse confident with pushy. It's going to be tricky and tough to teach something like that but I really believe to my core that it will make a HUGE difference in how our department performs. So I am working here and there on developing that part of the curriculum and I think that once I have a good solid something I will be able to present it and get it approved to add into the core training.
I am trying to make my presence even more known...I don't think the people above my boss really understand how much I am able to contribute beyond just teaching. I am hoping to prove that I can do much more than that (be careful what I wish for, right?) so they will have one more reason to bring me onboard full time. ;)
I'm Sarah, and this has been your West Coast Drama Report. (music play out...lol)
