Here we go again.........

DH came home from work early today and said that half his department was laid off!
This time he was in the half that was not laid off, at least for now.

He's been worried about this ever since his area was merged with an Israeli based company that the main company acquired who were working in the same kind of field. Most of the upper management and R&D are in Israel, and he didn't think it would be too long before they started paring back the North American based departments - he said he didn't think it would be anything like as brutal a cut though.
Supposedly those that are left have a "guaranteed" 2 year contract at least, but we will see how it pans out. DH said that he was really hoping to stay at this firm until retirement, but I don't honestly think that was realistic in today's high tech area.
We were just about to take the plunge and buy a new car - DH's old one is literally falling apart at the seams! but we'll probably hold off on that for now, or maybe we should do it while he still has a job? not really sure. The last new vehicle we bought was our current van, which we purchased about a month before DH was laid off last time, so we are a tad leery of buying anything new in the vehicular department right now!
He has a meeting tomorrow with his new Israel based head of department, everyone who is staying has a private meeting scheduled to talk over the "where do we go from here" stuff. He is nervous about it, he's so stressed tonight his stomach is in knots - and frankly so is mine!
I've been looking for a full time job, had a couple of interviews but nothing came of them. I will have to get myself in gear and start really looking hard for something, just in case...

Your poor DH Carole, after all he went through last time!  I hope that his meeting brings some reassuring news, I do feel for him.   These days there doesn't seem to be such a thing as a secure job. Keep us updated.  Fingers crossed!

Oh Carole that is just such difficult news. I really feel for you guys. We went through that sort of thing for a few years before DH retired. Then I was laid of, cut to part time ... it is a difficult thing to deal with. Hoping they do keep him for as long as possible.

He didn't sleep well last night, and he's headed off into work early this morning, he just wants to get the meeting over with and find out where he really stands. He is currently wishing he'd looked further into a call he got from a head hunter a few months ago, offering the possibility of a better paying job in the US. We really don't want to move and he was happy where he is now at that point, but it might be something we have to consider.

It's the whole roller-coaster thing Molly, it seems that 2-3 years is the most you can expect from a high tech company these days before a big shake up comes along. Not a very comforting feeling, when you're always looking over your shoulder and wondering! The other aspect is that DH's department were overloaded with too much work and not enough people before the cuts, and now there are only half the number left to do the same amount of work.

Oh, no, Carole.  That seriously bites.  You're right about tech companies, but sheesh... (((hugs))) to you and G...

Things seem to settling back down today. The personal meeting turned out to be a group meeting, but G said he felt it was productive, and he went out and bought a car on the strength of it! - I am hoping we do not come to regret that descision ;(

Rhi is going in to work with him tomorrow for "Take your Kid to Work Day" as previously planned. After yesterday when G said he didn't think it was a great idea to take her, she was worried that we would make her go to school instead, and be the only kid in her classroom lol!)

Stress level is still sky high, but so far G still has a job so we're looking on the bright side (at least for now!)

Oh no! I hope because this cut was so large everyone else will be safe for quite a few years. The economy here was not too bad, but some well respected large firms have recently announced closures here :( Not nice at all.

Terrible news! But glad that the meeting went well and he feels confident enough to buy a car! Good luck with it all!
