Advice: Double Stroller?

I'm wondering whether or not a double stroller is a good investment. Daley is going to be almost 3 when the new baby gets here in June. With DH randomly deploying every once in a while I could easily end up by myself with the two kids. Daley always rides in a stroller when we go somewhere like the doctor's office or the mall... anywhere without carts. My rule is that he is not to get down and run around anywhere out in public, period. With that in mind I would think it would be smart to perhaps get a double stroller. Right now we use the umbrella stroller a lot. I bought a Graco stroller back in the day for him but really only used it a handful of times. Any advice on when they start to outgrow the double strollers or if there are any particular ones that are good?

My first two little guys were 16 months apart so I bought the Graco Quatro Duo...I really love it but all double strollers are pretty big and a bit harder to maneuver.

Jill, you may be better off with your Baby Trend.

I got a MaClaren Double Stroller....actually my aunts got it for me.....I've really liked it but I haven't used it as much as I would have liked to.....it's very similar to an umbrella stroller but just has two seats.....very sturdy.

I have the Baby Trend Sit n Stand. I used it with Tovi before Oren was born to test it out and found it easy to fold and maneuver. Tovi DID NOT understand that he couldn't jump out of the platform while the stroller was moving, so we had to spend some time teaching boundaries and expectations, so that might be a mild draw-back. But with Daley being almost 3 by the time you need it, the platform and bench seat of the Sit n Stand would probably be ideal.

As with any "double" stroller, though, it takes up quite a bit of space in the trunk. I have to pop off the front tray and foot rest before mine will fit in my Pontiac G 6 trunk, but they are designed to pop off and on VERY easily, so it's no big deal.

I haven't used it yet with both boys because I usually have Oren in the sling, and we haven't gone any further away on walks than just down the block to the park. I imagine we'll use it a lot this coming Spring when Oren weighs enough that the sling is less than ideal :)

Watch for BRU or Target coupons to save a bit. I think I got 10% off mine when I got it from BRU. And it's VERY easy to assemble.

I have a Phil and Teds and could not live without it. DD was 2.5 when I had BB and she never wanted to ride in it so it was nice that BB could lie down in it and not be disturbed by her and I only had to push a single stroller. It was also great when we went out for the day and stopped to give her a snack because the doubles seat was the right height for me to sit on a bench and give her snacks and drinks. I still use it now that dd is almost 5 and bb is 2 when we go places for the day because they get tired. I know the price is high, but it does have a good resale value when you are done. Try to find one on Craigs list or ebay. I really do like that it is a double stroller but the same size as a single. If you have any questions or want to see a pic of my kids in theirs, I will be happy to share.

I ended up with a Phil and Teds too. I love it, I really searched Craigslist for one. My favorite part is the cocoon they make for it. I got that on Craigslist. I would get that even if I didn't get the stroller. I am not sure when they outgrow a double stroller though. Hartley has been riding in the stroller more than ever. As soon as I tried putting the baby in our Graco he kept on getting in and making me carry the baby. I think he felt displaced.

The other option I would consider instead of a Sit and Stand would be the buggy board. It will attach to most strollers and you don't have to buy a sit and stand then. I saw someone with this and they told me that they loved it.

I have to second the Phil and Ted. I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. We had to buy it second-hand because of the price tag and I still paid $375 for it. BUT...it was the ONLY thing we bought for our new baby and she has gotten all other hand me downs from Aspen.

That said...it's like a single stroller. You would NOT believe the turning radius on it. I never have trouble getting in and out of places with a stroller with 2 kids. People always stop me and comment on it and ask about it. I wear my LO a lot too, and then it's just like pushing a single with 1 kid (instead of a single that's a bit heavier) if that's the case. And the really good thing about it...when the older outgrows stroller riding...you just turn it into a single stroller for the baby only. So, it's really BOTH...a single and a double stroller.

I am so thankful that we were able to get one. It's a great investment with 2 small kiddos. You can use it a LONG time.
