HELP! Corroded batteries in toy

Usually I'm completely anal retentive about removing batteries from toys before I store them or if I know they're going to be sitting unused for a while. Last night, I hunted down my old Sega Game Gear, which I put away before Molly was born. I had a hankerin' to play this old Solitaire game on it so I found it and lo and behold...The batteries are corroded. Not horribly so, but enough for me to be creeped out.

Ordinarily I'd toss a toy with corroded batteries but man, this was a christmas gift from my parents back in the old days and I'd like to keep it!

How should I clean this up? Can I clean it up? Or do I need to be nervous that every time I take it out battery acid flakes are flying everywhere?
