So much for the rhythm method – ovulation can be more than once per month

Contributed by editor on Tuesday July 08, 2003 @ 06:31PM from the Health dept.

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have discovered that women can ovulate more than once a month, thus dispelling long-held beliefs and throwing some women’s reproductive plans for a loop.

It has long been believed that women ovulate once per month, but results released Tuesday show that some women ovulate two, three or more times per month.

"This work is particularly exciting to us because of the impact it will have on women taking oral contraceptives and undergoing fertility treatment," said Dr. Roger Pierson, Director of the Reproductive Biology Research Unit at the U of S in a press release. "It also shows that we have not fully understood the basic biological processes that occur during menstrual cycles. We are literally going to have to re-write medical textbooks."

The study monitored the menstrual cycles of 63 women, using ultra-sound to chart their ovulation.
