if my last period started on august 18th and my cycle is about 28 to 30 days long, when do i ovulate? and when is the danger zone of having unprotected sex? i'm really clueless about this stuff since i am not exactly trying to get pregnant, but my body has been feeling really off lately, and i am a little concerned. some of my symptoms so far have been a really bad cold (unrelated?), cramps, nausea, etc. if you have any information to link me to, that would be so helpful. thank you and all the best to everyone.

If your last period was August 18, then you probably ovulated on or near Sept. 1. That would your period due about like today. The danger zone would have been like 3 days before (if not 4) and maybe 1 after ovulation (Sept.1). There's a five or six day window. But Aug. 31, Sept. 1 were the peak days for fertilization. You should test. ...and with this crew we'll sit and wait on the results sister...so pep it on over to the drugstore and let us know!! :O) You didn't say...do you want to be pregnant? If not...you will by the time this group gets done with you!! Good luck...we'll be waiting!! Amanda

thanks for getting back to me...

i had unprotected sex on august 25th (monday) -- so i doubt that it would have caused anything to happen. i also had somewhat protected sex on september 5 and 6. i expect to get my period today or this week.. i am just a bit antsy because one of my friends is pregnant and i told her all of this and she said it's possible... because it was a similar timeline to when she became pregnant.

so basically the danger zone is one week after your period ends?

well, cycles can vary ofcourse... but on average..if you have a 28 day cycle...you start counting from the first day of your period. Count 14 days. That is the day you will most likely ovulate. When you ovulate you'll notice that you have more of a discharge, it's clear and stretchy. When you see that you are at your most fertile time. Sperm can live for 72 hours on average. So if a woman is supposed to ovulate on Tuesday, but has sex on Saturday...there's is a chance she could get pregnant, but naturally that chance increases the closer she is to ovulation when intercourse occurs. Once you ovulate, the egg has 24 hours of fertility. If it isn't fertilized, it disentegrates. So from about day 11 to day 15 is the danger zone. Hope that helps you. Amanda

well 11 days after the first day of my period would be august 28th which might make august 25th a risky day. i had no idea... i thought right after your period ended was the safest time. oops. it's kind of driving me nuts waiting for my period to come.

After your period usually is pretty safe, but nothing is guarenteed. And yes, the 25th was kind of a risky day. The waiting is the worst whether you want to be pregnant or not. I would recommend that if you aren't pregnant this time and you feel that you're not ready to be pregnant, you start keeping track of your cycle. You don't have to chart or anything, just circle the day your period starts on a calendar each month. This will tell you if you are regular every month. Also, start trying to pay attention to your body around the middle of the month. See if your CM changes and/or you start to feel crampy or a pinching feeling. Sometimes this is an indicator of when you ovulate. The more you know about your body, the less you have to worry when the time comes. My dh and I have not used BC since we've been married. I'm pretty regular so I know that the middle of the month isn't a good time for us to bd unless we are trying and, he would always pull out. It has worked for us well but you really have to know what your doing if you don't want to end up pg. If you do want to be pg then getting to know your body also helps with that too.

Good luck with everything and I hope you get the results you want. If your AF was due today I might just go get a test to clear my mind. An early result test like First Response Early should work now.
