That darn second line

Okay, going through and reading the post on several boards. Everyone says a line is a line, no matter how faint. Well if that's true, why did my blood test come back negative. I took several hpt and had a second line on 3 of them. I'm not the only one who saw them. DH saw it too. I got my blood test done on July 14 and it came back negative. I took another test a few days ago and got nothing. What is going on? Is this what is considered a chemical pregnancy? Did my body just absorb it up? I would love to be pregnant now, but after the neg. tests, don't think I am.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

Holly, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure if you got a pos. on 2 test, that you are pg. The lines I saw were very, very faint, very hard to see. You needed to hold them up to the light just to see. I thought I was imagining them, but DH said he saw something too. Maybe he was being supportive, who knows. I didn't mean to discourage or upset you. I'm just a bit frustrated and looking for answers.

I know a line is a line no matter what, but why did my blood test come back negative? I know they're not 100%, even the doctor said that. But after I got a neg. result the other day, I'm just wondering AM I GOING NUTS!! or did something happen.

Please don't worry because of my post,

Erika

Well the same thing happened to me about a week ago using FRE. One week ago Sat. had blood test came up neg. AF wasnt due till 17th. So when I tested on the 18th I got a BFP. Maybe there just isnt enough hcg in your blood yet to detect the pregnancy. Are you late at all? If you arent maybe you should just wait till AF is due then test again. You just might get the answer you want:)! Much luck to you! Keep us posted on what happens!

Hi Allana, yes, I'm late. The last time I saw AF was June 17. I stopped bcp on June 14, mid-pack...big mistake, and I think that's why everything is so messed up. I've been having many sypmtoms, but from reading some post, it sounds like it's common to have these sypmtoms after stopping the pill. I'm just going to wait another week and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply,

Erika

Hi Erika,

I went (am going through) the exact same thing. A line doesn't seem to be a line for me. Had a false pos on FRER last month (and the line came up immediately). Had 6 positives this month (4 on EPT!) and a neg blood. I even got a positive after the blood came back neg. Anyway, I have no idea what's going on. Frankly, it's a little frustrating. :) At least EPT was nice enough to refund my money on all 4 tests (they even ask that I send them back for quality control - which I did).

Good luck to you. I know how emotioanlly draining this is.

I am also going through something similar. I took two hpt this weekend and both were positive (both ept). The doctor's test however was negative and now I'm completely confused. What was the outcome of your situation? Were you ever given an explanation that made sense?

I had the same thing happen. I even saved the test and showed it to my ob. He couldn't explain it. The only thing he could come up with was that when I had miscarried two months before I still had a registerable level of hcg but he said that was a far stretch. I only tested once so it could have been a defective test.

Best Wishes.

Hello...I took 2 blood tests and they both came back negative. I see the doctor next week and hopefully he'll be able to explain why I had 3 test come out positive. I'm thinking it was a chemical pg if anything. Who knows!!

I totally understand what you are going through. I have had similar issues with various tests, and none of my doctors have been able to explain it. My only theory is that the HPT manufacturers want us to keep going out and buying tests, so I think some of the tests are faulty on purpose....of course, it could just be that they are faulty, or that there is something in our bodies that cause the test to have a positive result. I don't know for sure. What I can tell you is this - research the brands of tests....there are two which I have never had evap lines on - EPT and FRE. I have taken a lot of the cheap tests, and almost always end up with a faint evap line. And, if you have been ttc a long time, or if you have had to ttc in previous pgs, make sure you keep up with the times....with my first, confirm was the best test on the market, now I hear that even some men have tested that brand and got two lines. The manufacturers are trying to get accurate results earlier and earlier now, so they are changing the design and process of the tests all the time. A line is not a line always....I hate it when people imply that these tests are so accurate - that is why they don't say they are 100% accurate on the box. Also, another thing to be aware of - there are two different kinds of blood tests - a quantitative and a qualitative. Once, I had a qualitative test done and it was negative, but when they did a quant test a few days later (after I had four definite positive hpts), they found out that the level was so low...turned out to be a very early m/c (4 1/2 weeks). The quant test will give them an exact level. The qual test only gives a pos or neg result - that is based on a level of hcg that the LAB sets...in some cases I've heard this level being as much as 25-50 and as little as 5. So, definitely find out which blood test you are getting. A gal I know just took hpt at home which was neg, negative hpt in the doctor's office, and then got a positive blood test. Go figure....it's not an exact science, but my ob says that the quantitative blood test is most definitely accurate by the time you are 5-6 weeks pregnant....before that time, there is room for error. Good Luck! ~ Mary

Have you considered that you might be seeing an evaporation line? I get them all the time with FRE. If it develops later than the time allowed it is usually an evaporation line if it is so light you need to look at it from different angles or hold it up to the light to see.
