Does this work when your not PG?

Hello Ladies!
I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of tying a piece of your hair or string to your wedding ring, or a needle, and suspending it in front of your belly to determine if you are having a boy or a girl. according to this, if it moves back and forth in a straight line, you are having a girl, if it moves in circles, you are having a boy. But the thing is, does it work only when you are PG? or can it just predict what your next child will be? I am wondering this, because i have been thinking that i am PG for 3 weeks now, and have taken one test, which was neg. I have talked to a friend of mine who has a baby, and i am having the same symptoms that she had while PG. I have done the wedding ring thing 3 times, and each time it says i will have a girl. So can anyone tell me if this works only when you are PG, or does it work anytime? thanks a million!

p.s. i just found out that fraternal twins run in my family - just all of the sets either live far enough away that i've never met them or else they're older. (identical twins don't "run" in families - they're just as likely all over the world (1 in 250 births))

Ok, that statement is just funny. :)
I tried it for the sake of science LOL. It moved on me.. back and forth. *shrug* It would be HIGHLY unlikely for me to be pg.. I should just be starting to O (I found ewcm for the first time today!! and my dh is outta town until wed. Dang it) and we last bd'd on.. 10/28. So I REALLY shouldn't be pg. And it still moved. I can try it on my cat.. I know she ain't pg. ;)
Edited because I really did try it with my cat : nothing. :) For science's sake, of course. You have NO idea how hard it was to keep her from batting at it. hehe
