Does this work when your not PG?

Hello Ladies!
I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of tying a piece of your hair or string to your wedding ring, or a needle, and suspending it in front of your belly to determine if you are having a boy or a girl. according to this, if it moves back and forth in a straight line, you are having a girl, if it moves in circles, you are having a boy. But the thing is, does it work only when you are PG? or can it just predict what your next child will be? I am wondering this, because i have been thinking that i am PG for 3 weeks now, and have taken one test, which was neg. I have talked to a friend of mine who has a baby, and i am having the same symptoms that she had while PG. I have done the wedding ring thing 3 times, and each time it says i will have a girl. So can anyone tell me if this works only when you are PG, or does it work anytime? thanks a million!
