How reliable are Home Pregnancy Tests?

Hi everyone,

I am wondering how reliable you have found Home Pregnancy Tests to be? My period was due around September 14 or 15 and I am still waiting to get it. For days now my back has been hurting and my breasts have been tender. I have had a bit of spotting but nothing substantial. My husband and I did have unprotected sex a couple of times after my last period last month. I took a Home Pregnancy test but it came out negative. It could be that my period is just a bit late this month and I'm having some drawn out PMS symptoms, but I'm starting to wonder.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hpts are pretty reliable, but they are sometimes really hard to read.

I agreee that you may have taken the test too early. The first one I took was negative, but 2 dyas later it was definitely positive. Make sure you test first thing in the morning, when your urine is the most concentrated

Well, it's 2 days later and still no sign of AF. Well, I have had some spotting in the morning, but then it just seems to go away. I keep waiting for period to just arrive already! I can't stand how much my boobs hurt!

I did some research here at IVillage and I think maybe I tested too early and I also did it late in the afternoon after I had been drinking water all day. I think I'm going to buy another test and try again after another couple of days have passed. Another weird thing is I had a physical on September 10th and they took my blood and when my doctor gave me my results, she mentioned nothing about pregnancy. I mean, wouldn't she be able to tell then? Or maybe it could have been too early? I don't know, I don't know what to think.

I will keep you all posted. Thanks so much!

Olivia you have me really intrigued! Are you testing tomorrow morning when you wake up?

I don't know! Do you think I should test tomorrow morning? It's a full week after my period was due, so I wouldn't think it would be too soon..

Sorry - this is the same person; I changed my id.

Yes! Definitely! I tested 1 or 2 days prior to my period starting for my daughter.

OMIGOD!! I tested this morning and it was POSITIVE!! I'm kind of freaking out right now! It was so weird because last night I started to bleed a little and I thought "Okay, looks like I'm getting my period after all." But this morning, there was nothing again, so I tested, and sure enough there was a faint, but positive sign! I did have a bit more spotting though but it has stopped again.

I just can't believe it because my husband and I JUST started trying last month and I thought for sure it would at least take a few months. I cannot believe it happened this fast! What do I do now? Do I need to go back to see my primary caregiver to do a blood test and confirm it? My husband is going to freak!!!

THANK YOU!! I just can't wrap my head around this. My husband was sleeping! I get up and go to work a lot earlier than he does, so I did not wake him. I'm at work now and I'm dying to tell him. I don't know what I was thinking, I should have just woken him up as soon as I tested, but I had a bit of a panic attack and I didn't know what I was doing!

My doctor also happens to be my gyn., so should I go to her? I guess I should. She will probably refer mt to OB. I just cannot believe it happened so soon!! I gotta tell you, I am scared!! I am 34 and I've wanted this for awhile, but now that it's actually happening, I'm terrified.
