METALLIC TASTE?!
Wed, 10-11-2006 - 9:55am
Okay, so my husband and I decided to start trying for our first baby. I haven't been on any birth control for almost a year (in the event we wanted to start trying earlier in the year, which we didn't), so my husband and I had been been using condoms. Last Wednesday morning we woke up and had unprotected sex for the first time. Knowing my body and my cycle as well as I do, I knew it wasn't the optimal time to conceive, because AF was due to arrive on time as usual the next day, Thusday; however, I thought we'd go ahead and start getting warmed up for ovulation week in two weeks and also break the ice (for me and my nervousness). Silly me, I made sure we did it with my hips raised and even kept my legs in the air for about 10 minutes after sex! AF did come on Thursday as I knew she would and I proceeded to have some of my normal menstrual cramping on Friday and Saturday. Here's the unusual part...on Friday morning I had a less-than-5-seconds episode of sharp pain in my right pelvic region. It didn't bring me to my knees, but I did double over, and then it was completely gone. No sharp pains on Saturday or Sunday, just period getting lighter, as my period only lasts four days. More abnormalaties...On Monday morning, my husband and I were driving in to work together and I started some dull but heavy (not sharp as before) cramping to my right pelvic area. It slowly lightened in intensity, but I felt it throughout the morning. I thought about going to the ER (I'm a nurse in the hospital), but instead called my GYN and they squeezed me in for the afternoon. I knew at my Dr.'s there would be no long wait and they could do a urinalysis to check for kidney/bladder problem as well as check for ruptured cyst, etc. Urinalysis was negative for all, pregnancy test was negative, Dr. checked my ovaries, uterus, etc. and said I felt completely normal, but if pain worsens come back in and he'd do an ultrasound. Pain didn't worsen. It satyed kind of light dull cramping the rest of the day Monday. Then Monday night I noticed I had a slight metallic taste in my mouth that would not go away after eating, drinking, or brushing my teeth. I have no fillings, so I concluded that it's not dental related. Also, I am on no meds except for my multivitamin and folic acid. Tuesday at work the metallic taste lasted all day and continues to be present as I type this post. I also started feeling the cramping more central-pelvic yesterday rather than right-pelvic. To top it all off, I had some light bleeding yesterday. In the 15 years of "being a woman," my period has NEVER lasted to day 5, nor have I had light cramping at the END of my period. And this metallic taste?! As a healthcare professional, I know chances are slim to get pregnant the day before your period starts, but could it be? Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
