My sister called me today. She is not trying to get pregnant. She is on birthcontrol, but did forget 3 days in a row so she doubled up her pills. She just had her period around Thanksgiving. She works at the hospital and took a test today because she is feeling weird. She got a extremely faint line she says. You almost couldnt see it. A friend looked and agreed it was a faint line. Could she be pregnant? She just had her period? Can you still have your period and be pregnant? I told her to wait and try again tomorrow morning.

Oh and another thing, she of course drank some water and took it again a few hours later and negative????

I'd say she's almost for sure pregnant. The tests measure the amount of the hormone Hcg in your urine...so they say if it's really early on, to test first thing in the morning so it's pretty concentrated in your first pee of the day and there's a better chance that it will register as a positive. That would explain why after drinking a bunch of water it ended up testing negative; because she simply diluted her urine. However, false positives are EXTERMELY rare and basically any line, no matter how faint, is a positive. I personally had the same thing happen; I was sure I wasn't pregnant, took a test, and had to squint and hold it up to a light a certain way to see an almost invisible line....BARELY there. I must have looked at that thing 100 times, squinting and blinking and not sure if I was actually seeing a line or if my eyes were playing a trick on me. If I drank a bunch of water and tested again I wouldn't see a line. But alas, the line was a line after all and I was indeed pregnant despite all my early doubts.
I'm like 95% sure based on what I know that she's pregnant. She should try taking another test first thing in the morning with her first pee of the day and it'll probably have a line again. Or try again in a couple days (the hormone level will continue to rise and be more likely to be picked up by a home pregnancy test).

ps. you can still have what seems to be your period and be pregnant. My aunt didn't know she was pregnant till she was almost five months along because she continued having what se thought were periods. Your sister might have had implantation bleeding, not a period. That's when the fertilized egg implants, it would have happened around when she was expecting her period, and probably would have been lighter than usual.

the second test was most likely negative because she drank too much water and her urine was diluted. have her re test in the morning like the previous person said.
