Ovulated twice in a cycle?

I am looking for some help or advice on if I might be expecting a multiple birth. I think I ovulated twice last month. I have been charting my bbt, as well as using ovulation predictor strips, and each give a different indicator for when I ovulated. On Aug. 12 I started light spotting (lasted 5 days) but never got my normal period. Took several pregnancy tests (-), so I assumed it was just an irregular period and restared my charting for a new cycle. On Aug. 19 my bbt dipped to it's lowest point and then began to rise (by .7) which would indicate ovulation on the day it dipped. But, it was so early in my "new" cycle (Day 7) I didn't think it could be time. On Days 11 (am and pm) and 12 (am) I got positive ovulation tests (followed by an almost nonexistent line on Day 12 pm). I assumed I ovulated on Day 12 pm or Day 13 am. Just 4-5 days later, I began experiencing many symptoms of pregnancy. Constant nausea, headache, burping, heartburn, very tired, urinating more frequently. I knew it was probably too early to show up on a test, but the symptoms have kept up so I finally decided to test last night. I used 2 tests (Accu-check and Clear Blue Easy) and both came back positive. I was happy, but shocked. This is only 12 days after my bbt temperature dip, and 7-8 days after my positive ovulation test. I believe both these pregnancy tests require 50 mlU/ml HcG, so how are the levels high enough to show up? My books show that the egg wouldn't even implant and start to produce HcG until day 6-7. My husband and I have been intimate consistently every other day, so the opportunity to fertilize was there. How do I know? Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give!

I don't think you necessarily can know just yet. One recent study found that 13 out of 63 women ovulated more than once in a cycle, with the ovulations occurring as much as 2-3 weeks apart. At least one of the ovulations happened contrary to any physical symptoms or hormone levels... so there was no way to tell that O had occurred without a follicular ultrasound.

Other popular research has found that most multiple ovulations happen just within 24 hours of one another... but even then, the 2 Os are so close to each other that it would be extremely difficult to tell by looking at one's chart.

Either way, there's no way to know for sure by just looking at a chart or anything like that. Multiple ovulation is by far the exception to the rule, so the chances of it are rather slim; and while multiple O can run in families, it is still the exception to the rule. My best advice: be patient, and everything will work out.

Good luck to you!

I'm starting to think from what you said, that you may have been pregnant before. You said your last period, was light, and irregular. And you take these tests that measure high levels before any should be detectable, and its positive. Maybe your were pregnant last month, but the level weren't up there yet. The implantation could have been later than usual, and the levels didn't shoot up there. Or you could have multiples, your hcg will be higher with each extra baby there is. And so will you pregnancy symptoms. I can say that for sure...my morning sickness and sore bb's were just beyond thought with my twins. Either way, good luck. You most likely are surely pregnant if they both gave you BFP. I think its time to see the doctor, and they will figure it all out for you.
