Period during pregnancy?!
| Thu, 09-14-2006 - 1:59pm |
Okay I have been reading a lot on the web about women having their period while they are pregnant. I thought this wasn't possible. I have been checking it because for the last two months my periods have been extremely light (I have been on the pill for 4 years and they have been light since I started but lately they are only about 1-2 days and I barely need a tampon) I also use a condom most of the time (paranoid about getting preg). So I have been wondering about this period during pregnancy issue because I have read that women who get their periods during pregnancy will ALWAYS come up with a negative HPT.
Does anyone know about this?
Thanks!

Hi there....
While I don't think having periods during pregnancy is a very common thing, I guess it does happen sometimes. I recommend seeing your doctor and having them do a blood test to check for pregnancy if you think you might be.
Good luck and please let us know how you're doing! ;)

Technically you cannot have a real "period" during pregnancy because a period sheds the uterine lining in preparation for ovulation and possible fertilization. It is common, however to experience implantation bleeding around the time you would expect your period but this is usually very light, is usually brownish or pink in color, and lasts only a few days. ( I get this with each pregnancy). Usually when there is vaginal bleeding of any kind during a pregnancy it is cause for alarm because there are several conditions that can cause this including miscarriage and placental abruption, but there are people who do have bleeding of some sort but it is not a true period or they would miscarry. If you are concerned about your lighter-than-usual periods I would suggest to take a HPT (if you are pregnant, especially more than 6 weeks, an HPT should detect HCG in your urine...this is what's often referred to as the "pregnancy hormone")and if you are still concerned, go see you doc he/she can do a pelvic exam, ultrasound, and blood work.
As far as the idea that women who bleed during pregnancy always test negative...I have a hard time believing that but that is a good question to ask the doc!
If you are not having any other symptoms of pregnancy, I would guess that there is another explanation for the light periods but you should definately get check out, cuz ya never know!
Good luck
